    "The L"

Welcome to my newest purchase, as I like to call, The L. Purchased on July 24 2013

This is a 2000 Saturn LW2. Yes, this comes with the V6. I acquired it for 250 bucks, one previous owner, came with brand new winter tires and 2 summer tires. The things that attracted me to this vehicle is:

    - the price
    - roof rack
    - the price
    - winter tires
    - the price
    - 8 speaker sound system
    - the price
    - cargo cover
    - and the price!

All in all, I've spent about $270.00 and now it's mine and insured under storage insurance. Oh, btw, it's got this many KM on it:

You probably guessed that there was a catch.

This car's timing belt let go, and therefore because it's an interference engine, means the valves are most likely toast. It runs like a diesel, yet I've had it looked at and apparently it's salvageable. When it cranks over, it cranks normal, and there is no hesitation.. which tells us that there is no miss in a cylinder. It just knocks like a veedub diesel in the winter cold.

Ah yes, Steve is not the only L series in town anymore This will be my car for the dragon. If I can't get this running then I'm out of luck as my current SC2 will not be able to make the trip.

Now as stated, the car cranks evenly, and runs under it's own power, but when under load (slowly backing up and pressing the gas) it just wants to die. Doesn't hesitate or buck, just kinda, doesn't want to go. At idle here is how it sounds

WARNING TURN YOUR VOLUME DOWN BEFORE WATCHING THAT

I'm gonna see if I can save it just by adjusting the timing.

Keeping it V6 for the time being. Ecotec swap later down the road if required.

Probably just bent some valves and maybe some piston trouble but not enough that it won't run. Pop the heads off and take a look.
    Former modded N/A 97 SL2, unmolested 96 SC2, and turbo 95 SL2 owner.

99 SL2 Turbo - Parted out the turbo bits and putting it back to stock. It's already sold in it's stock form.
    00' SC2 DD - SOLD
2015 Fiesta ST - Recaro package. More fun to drive than a turbo Saturn and more reliable.
Loaded and cushy 2014 Ford Explorer as the family hauler.

Local guy who has some experience with Saturns is saying it's not worth the trouble to replace valves and pistons, to just get a new engine. But they are rare around here

I feel like I would trust an S-series on a road trip more than an L-series

Oh man, that engine is a nightmare. Good pick up for that price though and I love the fact that it's a wagon. If that was an Ecotec (factory) it would have been a great daily/beater for sure. Hope you get it running, would love to see it make it to the Dragon.

The point of this is that I got the car for basically nothing, the car itself is in great condition except for the engine. Going to do the work to the engine and then go from there.

Anyone else who wants to tell me about how bad these V6's are? Or are we done with that yet and I can move onto working on it?

And thanks Steve. Most likely will be posting in this thread often over the weekend as I look into what is going on.

As I said above, I'm going to start with the timing and see if it's out anything.

Don't listen to the haters about not being able to trust it on a road trip, mine has made two dragon trips and is ready for a third (1500 mile round trip) and I can't really rag on the V6, I had a loaner L300 once and it had some nice giddy-up. My car can barely get out of its own way at the moment lol. 113hp FTL

I'll keep my repair manual close by in case you have questions on things I haven't done on mine haha.

I've got many miles behind the wheel of a5 spd l200. Not a bad car actually, if nothing else you should cram a 3800 sc in there or the turbo Saab v6

Posting some reference material for myself:

    Tools needed.

THE V6 LOCKING KIT or Non-tool method
    Socket set with extension bar.
Adaptors to accomodate the fact that you will need to use 3/8" bits on 1/2" and vice versa for torque setting.
Torx Sockets, Set comprising E10 - E16 for General use, E20 to turn the crank.
Torx bit TX50 (only need this if you need to manually move the cams i.e the old belt had slipped)
    Torque Wrench
    30mm wrench for the pullys.
13mm wrench and Allen ket to set the tension.
15mm wrench for the AUX belt tensioner.
Rubber mallet to persuade the waper pump to come off.
    Screwdrivers
12 pack of beer and the phone number to the local pizza place to keep your buddy interested in helping you. (priceless)

Hope this may inspire someone to give it a go!

Here is a few links I found with great instructions. Remember the Saab 9-5 shares the same L81 GM 3.0L DOHC engine. This first link should be all you need to get the job done. Also go to your local library and see if they have the Haynes manual for the car, they should also have AllData and if your lucky you can access the AllData from home with library card.
