One more reason to not buy cheap Chinese turbos

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Za0DieZHMKc

An out of control turbo is completely possible. I rented a Budget box truck once that kept throwing codes. The diesel tech showed up and it was throwing a code saying the waste gate wasn't opening (over boost).

As cheap as you can get used turbos, there's no reason to save some money by buying a Chinese turbo. If you absolutely have to have a brand new turbo, save your money and buy a name brand.

99' SL2 Turbo - Parted out, returned to stock years ago, still on the road but everything keeps breaking.
    00' SC2 DD - SOLD
    02' SL1 - On loan to someone

Def cannot agree on this one. At 3 to 5 k a pop for most HD applications they still do not hold up like you would want. Many have their variable vaine actuators burn out because the vaines are siezing. And others just the the vaines sieze leaving you with low power and lag. The ones that are lasting 6 months get the first warrantied but by the time it fails again they are buying another. Would you buy a motor that contains its inards better after blowing up? Seems like a silly reason.

This isn't about reliability; I have seen tons of guys go pretty far on cheap turbos. This is about safety. An engine blowing up won't throw shards through the fire wall; even Seth's grenading of his engine didn't do that. A turbo spinning at 170,000 RPM exploding can be catastrophic (as seen in the video).

It's the same reason they require clutch/flywheel containment at the track on certain cars. I have seen what a spinning flywheel can do when it comes apart without proper containment, and a turbo coming apart could do the same thing but with smaller parts.

That awkward moment ... Assembly or reman centre? Reman centre could be cool, for a bit. Had a tour of the Cat one here few years back.

Not entirely sure, to be honest. All he mentioned was something to do with R&D, around $50k a year, in Minnesota, before I shut him down saying I wasn't interested in going back for Diesel Certs, which he was stressing. I'll ask next time we're in contact with the Duluth part of my family.

You and me both. Had the chance to work for the company that chopped up cars for the brochures you get at the dealer. Also had a chance to work at the Ford Dearborn test facility beating on cars. Kind of glad I didn't do either, but at the same time it would have been bad ass.

Yep. Potentially awesome gig? Fuck yeah. Naturally, the offer came AFTER I had leapt head first out of the tech game... lol.

Oh well. We'll see in a few months if holding out all these years for Law Enforcement will pan out.
