    Joe's OEM+ daily build {Now with more Bilstein!}

I've been looking for a stock car, couldn't find any nice wagons around here that were 5 speed so I ended up picking up this 98 SL2 with 145k for $1600.

    sl2.jpg

After driving it for a few days and wanted to give it a check up. Gapped the plugs, cleaned up the coil packs, sprayed some seafoam into the intake/tb, and made this sweet intake out of a bunch of left over crap I had laying around. Strapped the AIT to the coolant hose, hopefully keep it running a little leaner. After driving it for a little bit I have no doubt I'm getting 30mpg around town. I think after a full tune up I'll see 40 on the highway

    Plans: Intake (done)
    - replace T stat, car runs a little cold (done)
    - Fix small exhaust leak
    - 91 header -> punch out cat -> replace everything after resonator with 2.25" and magnaflow muffler
    - Audio stuff, head unit, amps, and speakers (done except amp)
    - Coilovers. Custom Koni rears, Progress fronts. Undecided on spring rates.
    - Wheels and tires, probably 15", something simple
    - Mostly black interior swap, have 3/4 of the stuff in the garage
    - Black badges
    - Rally armor mud flaps
    - Window visors
    - Maybe ebay headlights

INB4 when are you boosting it

    My neck hurts now.

Looks super clean man. How bad did it smoke with the Seafoam?

The IAT around he upper radiator hose will cause it to pull timing and hurt the power...thus it probably will negate the gains for running it leaner to save fuel. If anything, put the IAT as close to the engine as possible so that it can get a more accurate reading.

bummer, I'll move it into the intake, closer to the throttle.

Sorry about the 2nd/3rd pic being sideways, it wouldn't upload the attachment correctly and it wouldn't let me edit or delete it for whatever reason.

Probably, just removed it for now.

Small update, got the power locks working, just a bad fuse. Overhead light was out, turns out the bulb had just come loose. Welded up the exhaust leak, sounds solid. Put one of the black badges on the front bumper, the red sucks against green. Ordering a T-stat, valve cover gasket and plugs tonight, should be running great then and I won't be cold all of the time because my heat sucks. Got about 28mpgs last tank, not bad.

Want something a tad stiffer than the Eibachs when I go to a lowering spring. Probably progress or H&R.

Got a few small mods done today to keep me from hating the car. Pulled apart the shifter, chopped an inch of the top, wrapped the bushing around the ball in gappers tape and put on some fresh grease. Feels a lot more solid, shifts nice and I didn't want to take any more off of it since I'm not into slammed short shifters. There is still some slop where the linkage connects to the trans so I plan to fix that shortly.

Also threw in my old head unit so I can listen to something besides the radio, actually doesn't sound too terrible with the OEM speakers. Going to pick up some inexpensive aftermarket replacements shortly as well as add in an amp. Sound should be solid after that.

Looks like it has a new shifter bushing in it which is great, shouldn't have to worry about that failing.

New shifter towards the front, old one I had one my wagon (cut ~3") in the back.

Annnnd all back together, mission for the day accomplished.

I have played with some of those short stubby shifters and I hear ya on that. I think I took mine down to just past the bend but then added some back when I welded he bolt back on. It was more of a height thing for me when I made it...plus it was a shorter throw but easy to still change gears since there was no extending the bottom side.

Some people love them, I can't seem to get the car to shift nice enough when I'm driving it with a really short shifter (maybe I need to work out more bro?). I plan on extending the top of the coupe shifter back up at least an inch, it's way too short for me. I want to toss a center console into this car so having the shifter real low makes it a little tough as well. Also I'm going to try to find a leather knob (and eventually a steering wheel, mine is beat) at the junk yard next time I'm out there, they feel way nicer than the stock rubber jawnskis.

I might try to change the throw on the shift tower at the trans, I know it's not really too tough to get that done and then I wouldn't have to fuck with the shifter any more. I'll be pulling it off anyway to try to tighten it up and get most of the rest of the slop out.

Final not for this reply, I've been driving the car a bunch and it's been running pretty darn well, hopefully even better with the new plugs and T-stat. In the spring I'll probably replace the downpipe and the cat since the flex it getting a little beat and I'm sure the cat is original to the car so it's probably shot as well. I'm tempted to hack it out and weld in straight pipe for now, but I think I'll just wait haha.

you could make a pretty simple 555 timer based o2 sim like here: http://mkiv.com/techarticles/oxygen_...tor/index.html for off-road purposes.

Oh I would just buy a spacer from ebay for like $10, super simple, just won't pass emissions when I have to send the car in for it in 2 months. Guess I could buy a fake cat and use the spacer together.
