Nm, the back of the block gets the side load. So pinning it from the back, about 2 inches below deck and just above the oil galley in the bottom of the sleeve. Should control lateral shifting of the sleeve.

Pinning also distorts the boars once the engine is up to temperature. .. The cylinders want to expand but the posts don't let them so the cylinder because slightly oval. This results in less heat transferred form the piston rings to the cylinder wall and causes the piston to over heat and also increases oil blow by and getting excess oil in the combustion chambers which makes detonation more likely.

After studying my extra block, posting it would be a nightmare anyhow. I believe you are right about just stepdecking the block by .003" and letting it ride.

I did notice something unusual about the oem sohc pistons I have, it seems the pin is offset. I know an old ford and chebby trick is to flip the offset. It gives a better rod angle on the power stroke, it also increases piston dwell after tdc, which increases power. That was an old Smokey Yunick trick for power, guys would flip the pistons and pickup 2 tenths in the 1/4. The downside is severely increased piston slap, often described as a "cement mixer full of marbles." But that was 40 years ago, with the decreased piston clearances and modern metallurgy I'd be willing to bet it would only slap when cold. Another plus side is a reduced side load on the major thrust side of the cylinder wall. Because of the rod angle, it acts like it has a longer rod.

Just a brain dropping, don't mind me.

Did you install them offset to the intake or exhaust?

    Then it wouldn't be sloppy.

May take you up on that in all seriousness.

I'm stuck between actually doing a legit build, or just slapping shit together and crossing my fingers like I always have.

I'm going to mic the crank and shit to check the clearances, I'd like to run .0025-.0028 with Sam's bypass mod.

If that means machine work and new bearings then so be it. I'd like to get the couple of cranks I have laying around checked, and have the best one balanced.

I guess since the car is still running I can take my time with this engine.

You got free forged pistons. I'd spend a few bucks more to do it proper. Yeah it defeats your intent but you have the required goods now to hold real power

I would not consider new bearings to be defeat in a budget build. The are a necessity like a new head gasket.

Exactly. You going to scrape an intake manifold gasket off a junkyard car instead of spending $12?
