97 sc2 racecar not altenator problems.

So a couple months ago i bought 2 Saturn's that were pre built race cars. Stripped, caged, ect. The 97 was supposed to be a parts car but my buddy wanted to throw money at it and race it.

The problem we have been chasing is the altenator is not charging the battery. The way the car is wired it by passes the ignition switch and goes right into a panel with a switch and push button start, then to starter then altenator back to battery. We put a new battery and altenator it and were pretty sure it burnt up. We're not sure what were doing wrong. We have added grounds and check existing ones. Almost seems as if the altenator is getting too much power too it.

The older alternators are a single wire field, voltage regulator is built into the alt. It needs a switched +12v to charge. If it's a newer style alt, they are controlled by a +5v PWM from the pcm. Not sure when they changed it. I think it was in 96. Get an alt from a 95 or older and wire it to your main ignition switch and profit.

    This is the PWM alt.

This is the one wire. This is the one you want.

You have a large terminal that goes to the battery, then you have a smaller single wire plug that needs a +12v switched ignition source.

Any idea what pin the 12v wire goes to ? I don't have the plug for the older style altenator.

It's a 10si alt. Check Google for a wiring diagram.
