    Rally Turd, Codename: Splaturn

    Ver 1.0:
    front.jpg
    Front2.jpg
    gap pics.jpg
***Ignore the exhaust hanging down. It fell off the hanger and I ended up running over it when I backed up. lol

I accomplished all of the lifting by inserting ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) blocks under the following locations:
    1) Rear subframe

    rear subframe block.jpg

    2) Both Trailing arms

    trailing arm.jpg

    3) All 4 front subframe mounting points (pictures tomorrow)

    4) I made pucks for all 4 struts to space them down.
I used stock strut mounts and cut/drilled out the studs.
Then I used new studs long enough to go through the 2" spacers
The bolts were weld to the mount for ease of fastening the nuts on the frame.

    strut spacer.jpg

    5) To keep normal axle angles, I created a spacer for the TAM. The other mounts are not modified.
This won't stay this way since its not going to last the heat cycling from the engine.
I used DOHC head bolts to bolt the TAM and spacer into the TCC.

    tam spacer.jpg

    6) Extended Joint for the steering column (pics to come)
Since the subframe was dropped, the rack had to move down as well.
If you dont drop it and make elevated mounts, there will be massive toe out.
I took two joints from the rack to the column and kept the tube sections for each.
I then used some HRF and hammered it into each the the joint tubes.
It doesnt bind, but it does result in the steering wheel being clocked off center.

    Interesting. What is the purpose?

That rear trailing arm area looks pretty sketch, especially with that rust.

How does it drive on the street with that silly offset? Take it to a Cars & Coffee yet?

I would consider a turd for my next rallyx car, if diffs are still readily available.

It's surprisingly stable on the street now that I put an uncut swaybar back up front. If you cut the sway bar in half, you'll get a shitton of bump steer from these big tires. It made it kinda unstable and wasn't really necessary for the kind of off roading i was doing. Last weekend I drove it and a my BMW on my trailer to the Silver Lake sand dunes and besides the rear squatting down and making the front end squirrelly on WOT acceleration in low gears, it was great @ 70mph lol

The reason this car was made was for the Detroit gambler 500. I'll enter it again next year with the hopes that its not going to be a cold, rainy, miserable weekend. Until then, I'm going to hit sand dunes and other trails to see what needs improving before the next gambler.

It was over at the Silver Lake Dunes. I still need to take it to Bundy Hill though.
I loaded the video to youtube. It has been added to the first post.

I just looked up what the Detroit Gambler 500 is. That might be the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

Tooling around detroit for the gambler and doing shitties in the old Packard plant's lot was fun. But the 2.5hr drive north and turning all of the two track trails up there into parking lots was lame.

However once camp was set up, everyone got super drunk, whipped out a one sided ramp, and then proceeded to try to Saudi-2 wheel it while not flipping over. Its amazing no one died or got run over. Its not as much offroading as you would think.

Also those gambler rallies are popping up all over the place now.

Now I'm in the process of trying to see if a Ford F250 hitch will mount in place of the stock bumper [See: 2002 F250 front hitch]. This will make it possible to bolt that on and try to run a hitch mounted winch in the front or rear.

Before I even go higher/more travel with another suspension setup, I'd still run into issues with alignment stemming from the tierods not reaching down far enough.

I dealt with this issue when I dropped the subframe 2" and had to decide if I wanted to weld together longer tierod ends, or extend the CV joint from the steering column.
Does anyone know if the thread/pitch is similar to other vehicle's tie rod ends? I will need a significant increase in outward adjustment to keep the wheels from toe-ing out if the vehicle becomes lifted even more from the other struts. It is possible to cut the ball joint off another S-series tierod end and weld it to the inside of a complete ball joint, but then the weld will possibly [probably?] become the failure point in that system.

Unless you are extending the lower control arm your going to have bumpsteer issues if you extend the tie rods.

I looked it up too on Jalopnik. Crazy.

In this link at the end I found what looks a Gen1 Saturn trying to be a Subaru BRAT ...

Yeah, even with the swaybar intact, the big tires give quite a lot of feedback into the steering wheel. It likes to jerk one direction if you aren't paying attention.

Yeah, I saw those guys at the beginning of the first day and the beginning of the second day. They regretted hacking that roof off when they had to drive 200+ miles in 40*F rain...I'm keeping all my doors, windows, and seals intact for that very reason. lol

I welded together a Geo TB throttle cable bracket this weekend using a brake hose bracket and some flat stock I had laying around. [Pics to come]
The throttle response improvement is welcomed with these big tires.

This week I'll be pulling the AC parts and start looking for a smaller radiator and fan I can tuck up somewhere so I don't annihilate it on bumps again.

I know the inners are common to many GM FWD - when I bought the pair of them from ebay for my turd, the part number crossed to many, many GM FWD vehicles. You may very well find it will match with some other GM FWD outer to gain some length.
