Ill pick up an LED from Batteries+ over lunch.

The guys on the MSextra forums are suggesting gutting the ICM and installing the additional drivers into the MS3. Id rather attempt going with EDIS instead of dicking around with that if the LED test doesn't reveal anything meaningful.

I wouldn't gur the icm if it's giving you a clean tach, I would just pull the coils off the icm and drive them with the MS. Two female spade connectors is all you need.

So I would need to add an additional driver to the MS3 to drive both coils?
Also I don't understand how to wire the coils individually without being connected to the ICM [Provide 12v to one spade and connect the other to MS3 for it to control ground???]

Yes on the coil, +12 ignition and ground through the ms.

As far as the ms3, I'm not sure what you need to run coils. I know with the ms1 and 2 unless I'm mistaken you need to build a coil driver, I'm unsure on the ms3. I'll look through the manual when I get a few minutes.

Page 98 of the ms3 manual has a pinout and wiring diagram of a 4cyl cop using ls1 coils.

    Looks straightforward.

I'll try to pull apart one of the OBDII ICMs tonight and see how to directly wire the coils so the MS3 can drive the coils.

I think the obd2 is just a logic input to fire the coils. But it doesn't take the crank sensor input, the crank sensor is wired directly to the obd2 pcm.

Obd1 icm is wired to the crank sensor and gives the obd1 pcm a clean tach signal.

I'll leave the OBDI icm installed [Moved elsewhere] to provide clean tach.
I'll then gut another ICM, make direct connections to the spade connectors for 12V and then have the MS drivers command spark [A "cleaner" version of just using spade connectors to plug into each coil]

Pulled the cover off of the ICM and removed the goop and the PCB in the bottom. It looks like I'll probably need to remove some of the plastic covers around the metal tabs to get a better surface to solder onto.

I'm pretty sure you can just drive the obd2 icm with the low current/voltage spark outputs of the ms3. Look up Arron soccer's threads, he had a diagram. Maybe under the trubo screen name.

The brown wire coming from the 36 pin connector is Spark A

If that's the case, it would be pretty easy to do that versus dig around the ICM internals and solder jumpers. Still would need to install a second IGN driver on the DB15.

You are supposed to be able to use logic output for obd2. Just can't get a clean tach with obd2

Just a jumper wire. No need for a driver.

Then I really don't understand wasted spark. One MS Driver can drive two coils at the same time?

The icm drives the coil. You just give the icm a 5v signal to tell it when to fire the coil, a "logic level" signal. The ms3 says it has 8 built in logic level ignition circuits.

I may have skipped it in reading, but why were they suggesting you take apart the ICM?

He was looking to directly drive coils instead of logic level I think

The older MS used the LED to drive the 5v ref to the ICM. I forget how it was done with MS3. But the ECU drove this as I believe you wanted the bypass off for cranking and on for running (may have that reversed). So wiring it to the TPS 5v ref doesn't seem right.

When I ran spark, it used the GM7x setting for OBD1 module.
