1996 Saturn sc2 can idle but will not run on any load

Compression is all good but after a little of idling it goes down. When the egr is taken off it runs fine (egr is brand new replaced old one hoping it was the problem) I suspect that water is getting into the egr valve but Iím not sure.
Things that are not the issue:
    Egr valve
    Tps
Carbon build up on throttle body (cleaned)

    Things it could be:
Bad piston rings (car has always burned oil I ad a quart every other fill up on gas)

    Water getting into egr

It could also be the head gasket or cracked head but it doesnít show any signs of either.

    Any ideas?

Just to clarify, water or coolant is getting in?

If it runs better with the egr off and you have major low power complaints check for a clogged cat.

It sounds like there is carbon plugging up the egr pentle.
Take the EGR valve off and give it a quick rev to 4krpm and then shut it off and re-install the EGR. This will help blow excess carbon out of the EGR track. If you burn a lot of oil the carbon will build up again but you should be okay for a few months.

1996 Saturn sc2 can idle but will not run on any load

So figured out what the problem was. It was the pre cat on the exhaust manifold (it was clogged to the point where exhaust could get through but wasnít allowing the flow it needed). Is there any way around that without having to buy another exhaust manifold (they are too expensive)

Yeah I know I saw that and I was like dang when did saturn parts get so expensive. I solved the issue I just gutted a hole as wide as the pipe in the cat on the exhaust manifold still has the other cat so should pass smog when I have to get it registered soon

I wondered if that was the case. Can't believe that happened back then.

Well now that you found the initial issue, might want to look into if it is burning oil or running too rich.
